Drama, Film & Theatre Studies

Drama, Film and Theatre Studies brings together creative practice, performance, production and critical response. It is a new Leaving Certificate subject, taught in a first group of schools since September 2025 and joined by more schools each year.

This course gives students an introduction to the subject and explores the connections between the different areas they will encounter throughout their studies. Rather than treating film and theatre as completely separate subjects, students are encouraged to understand how ideas, performance, production and critical thinking connect.

Practical learning

Students are introduced to the subject through practical and creative exercises. The emphasis is on creating an environment where students can experiment, collaborate and begin developing their own creative and critical responses.

Who is it for?

Designed primarily for students beginning their Leaving Certificate Drama, Film and Theatre Studies journey. It can also be used as an introductory programme for schools considering how best to introduce students to the subject.

Course outcome

Students develop a clearer understanding of what the subject involves and how its different areas connect. They also begin to develop the confidence, creativity and collaborative skills needed to engage with the subject.
